چکیده

Rabies in man and animals continues to be a serious problem for public health and the livestock economy in most countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (I). Between 1980 and 1985 this area had a total of 1,744 registered rabies cases in humans, 83,858 in dogs, 6,876 in cats, and 28,800 in cattlealthough a considerable share of the bovine cases are usually not reported (2). According to data submitted by the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean to the Pan American Zoonoses Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during 1985 these countries prepared more than 5.2 million doses of suckling mouse brain (SMB) vaccine at 19 off&l production laboratories for the immunization of three million people, this being about the number requiring rabies treatment annually. In addition, in that same year official and private laboratories produced around 25 million doses of antirabies vaccine for veterinary use, 87 % of which were SMB vaccine (3).

Short duration of neutralizing antibody titers after pre-exposure rabies vaccination with suckling mouse brain vaccine.

The human anti-rabies pre-exposure treatment currently used in Brazil, employing a 1-ml dose of suckling mouse brain vaccine (SMBV) administered on days 0, 2, 4 and 28, was compared to an alternative treatment with two 1 ml-doses on day 0, and one 1 ml-dose injected on days 7 and 21. The latter induced higher virus-neutralizing antibody (VNA) titers on day 21. Both Brazilian rabies vaccines pro...

Purified rabies vaccine (suckling rat brain origin).

A 10% suckling rat brain rabies vaccine free from encephalitogenic activity was prepared and inactivated with 1:8,000 beta-propiolactone (BPL), or ultraviolet light, or a combination of ultraviolet light and BPL, or 1% phenol. Potency was excellent in all samples, with the exception of the phenolized product which was marginal. A purified suckling rat brain (SRB) vaccine prepared by zonal centr...

Rabies virus inactivation by binary ethylenimine: new method for inactivated vaccine production.

The inactivation dynamics of rabies virus (PV strain) by binary ethylenimine, and the immunogenic properites and the stability of the vaccines prepared using this agent, were studied. Binary ethylenimine at a final concentration of 0.01 M was prepared wtih 2-bromoethylamine hydrobromide in alkaline solutions, either separately from or in suspensions of rabies virus propagated in BHK cells. The ...

Sensitivity of bhk-21 cells supplemented with diethylaminoethyl-dextran for detection of street rabies virus in saliva samples.

A tissue culture system for detecting rabies virus from saliva samples of suspected animals was developed and compared to suckling mouse inoculation. Swab samples were obtained from the mouth of the animal heads received for rabies diagnosis; these swabs were submerged in maintenance medium. The maintenance medium was inoculated intracerebrally into suckling mice and onto BHK-21 cells with diet...

Stability and potency studies of anthrax vaccine (Bacillus anthracis 34F2 Sterne strain) in Iran

For evaluation the stability and potency of anthrax vaccine prepared in Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute in Iran, samples of different batches of vaccine were kept at 4-8 °C (refrigerator), 20-25 °C (room temperature) and 37 °C (incubator). The viable spores/ml of vaccines were determined using plate–counting method before and after holding at different temperatures monthly. Vaccine p...
